elementary health curriculum

Health is a condition of well-being that is required for the development of each individual and for society as a whole. Health instruction at the elementary level builds a strong foundation to promote the health and well-being of our students. The health education program works in partnership with the home, school, and the community. The elementary program provides accurate, age-appropriate information and builds upon prior learning.

During the 2008-09 school year, it was decided that the district would discontinue the use of the Children's Market Great Body Shop K-5 Health Curriculum. The district Health Education teachers were asked to create a new K-5 Health Curriculum to meet the needs of children in the district. During the spring of 2009, the health education staff began researching various national health curriculum to use to aide in the process of writing the Niskayuna curriculum. The following curriculum were consulted:

  • Know Your Body
  • The Michigan Model
  • Health Smarts
  • The Great Body Shop

In the summer of 2009, the health education staff began writing the K-5 curriculum. The curriculum was completed and rolled out to staff at the beginning of September, to be piloted in the 2009-10 school year. During that time focus groups met to discuss concerns, additions, and deletions to the curriculum. In the summer of 2010, the curriculum was revised by the health education staff. Teachers received the revised curriculum and began teaching the curriculum during the 2010-2011 school year. Assessment tools for grade 3-5 were developed and implemented the Spring of 2011.

Copies of the K-5 curriculum are available in the Principals office of each elementary school in the district. Individuals can view the curriculum by appointment with the building principal, District Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, or district health education staff. (A brief overview of the curriculum is listed below)

Health education is taught by the classroom teacher in grades K-5. Additionally, a certified Health teacher instructs the fifth grade classes in the areas of Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention as well as Family Life Education.

(Parents can request that their children be allowed to "opt out" of the human sexuality portion of any Health Education course. To request this option, parents should secure the "Opt Out Form" and submit it in a timely fashion to either the classroom teacher or the building principal.)
