Superintendent search update

Board of Education invites Dr. Cosimo Tangorra Jr. back to Niskayuna for a final interview

 

The Niskayuna Board of Education has invited Dr. Cosimo Tangorra Jr. to return to the district as the finalist for the superintendent position, following an extensive search that included substantial community involvement this year.

Dr. Tangorra is currently the State Education Department's deputy commissioner for P-12 Education. He has 12 years of experience as a superintendent in New York. Dr. Tangorra's service in public education also includes principal and teaching experience.

Two teams of community stakeholders interviewed three finalists for the position earlier this week. The interview teams included 32 district stakeholders - parents, community members, students, faculty, staff, and administrators - who devoted four nights to the process. Following their feedback, the Board invited Dr. Tangorra to come back to Niskayuna for a day.

The search process also included four open forums and an online survey that helped inform the Board as to the community's profile for the desired candidate.

"We said from the start that we would not undertake this process without input from our community," Board President Patricia Lanotte said. "I especially want to thank the members of our stakeholder teams for their diligence in the interviews and thoughtful feedback to the Board. Dr. Tangorra is a strong, collaborative leader with extensive experience in education and a commitment to student learning. I am pleased that he has accepted our invitation to return to our district and we look forward to showing him around our schools."

As part of the final interview round, Dr. Tangorra will visit district schools and spend time with interim Superintendent John Yagielski. The visit will culminate in a conversation with the Board of Education.
