Niskayuna High School students don't need to leave campus to pick up
essentials like pens and notebooks - and even some items that can boost school
spirit like Niskayuna hats and pennants. The Student Work Program opened a
school store this year that operates about twice a month in the Crossroads area
of the school.
The store provides a valuable service to the school community, and gives the students important real-world experience. They do all of the shopping themselves, keep track of their inventory, maintain a ledger of purchases, and interact with customers. It has been a great opportunity for students to learn both about operating a business and many aspects of a retail operation, said teacher John Leclerc who leads the Student Work Program.
Students in the Work Program spend time in the classroom learning pre-vocational skills and also participate in job training and work at community sites, local businesses, and Schenectady Community College.
For now, they are pleased to have launched the store this year, but hope to make it much bigger and increase awareness of it among the student body next year, said student Mackenzie O'Brien.
The store will next be open on Thursday, May 28, opening at 1 p.m. - please stop by!
Interim Superintendent John Yagielski stops by the store to make a purchase recently.
