Congratulations to Niskayuna High School senior Garrett Whitley for being
selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft on Monday, June
8, in Seacaucus, N.J. Garrett was taken 13th overall by the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Silver Warriors outfielder was the highest drafted high school player from New York in 24 years and the first student-athlete to ever be drafted by a professional sports team out of our high school.
We wish Garrett all the best in the future. He has the backing of an incredbily proud community!
The draft came a week after Garrett was named the Gatorade New York State Baseball player of the year. That award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.
