At the May 26 meeting of the Board of Education, the suggestion was made that
the school district investigate the source of an anonymous website that surfaced
in the days leading up to this year's Board election. As a result, we consulted
with our attorney on this matter. The advice we received is that the district
has no obligation to conduct such an investigation. Legal counsel also advised
us that pursuing this further may not be considered a prudent use of taxpayer
resources or district time and attention. We accept our attorney's advice. The
Board has no intention of diverting our focus away from students and student
learning to spend more time on this issue.
However, the Board would like to voice its strong opposition to this type of election tactic. Our community deserves an honest, open, and credible discussion about issues of importance. We are concerned that activity like this could discourage quality candidates from pursuing Board service. Finally, the Board believes that this is far from the type of behavior that the adults in our community should be modeling for our children.
The Board is deeply committed to our focus on students, and we shall move forward working on policies and initiatives that will result in positive outcomes for our students, schools, and community.
