Award  recognizes achievement and character

Niskayuna High School senior Alexandra Betencourt-Perez recieved one of two Chancellor McGovern Scholarships to be awarded this year at the June 16 meeting of the Board of Regents. The scholarship, endowed by a contribution from former Chancellor Joseph McGovern, provides $500 to a graduating high school senior who is a son or daughter of employees of the State Education Department or the Board of Regents.

The students must plan to attend a postsecondary education program in the fall. The award recognizes character and academic achievement.

The award was presented to Alexandra by Regent Beverly L. Ouderkirk, of the 4th Judicial District, which includes the Niskayuna Central School District.

The meeting was streamed live on the Board of Regents website and will remain in the archives
on the site. It can be viewed here.

Alexandra will attend Russell Sage College in the fall. This winter she attended the 2015 Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute at the State Capitol. She was recognized by legislators and SOMOS Inc. for her accomplishments.
