How's the new playground? Ask that question of a Birchwood student
these days, and they'll take a break from climbing, sliding, twisting through
the air, long enough to give the only answer possible: "Awesome."
After a nearly year-long effort to build a new playground, students, teachers and staff members, PTO leaders, Principal Deb Berndt, and district leaders gathered at Birchwood's annual back-to-school barbecue on Friday, Sept. 18 to cut the ribbon to it. The previous play structure was taken down last fall due to safety concerns.
Replacing it was a true community effort. The PTO raised more than $15,000 in less than a year for enhancements to supplement the new playground provided by the district. More than 75 volunteers came out for a two-day community build over the summer.
Following the community build, all that remained was the installation of one piece of equipment and the ground surface. There is a special floor down the center of the playground that makes it more accessible for those with disabilities.
Enjoy these scenes from the playground opening and recess on a recent Friday afternoon.
