School Board election on the May 16 ballot; “Meet the Candidates Night” on May 2

Update: The Meet the Candidates Night scheduled for May 2 at 7 p.m. will be held in the Niskayuna High School Auditorium.

Three candidates are running for two seats on the Niskayuna Central School District Board of Education. Candidates, in ballot order, are Kristin Duffy, Jessica LaFex and Sarah Tishler.

Board members are volunteers elected to three-year terms. The terms of the individuals elected this year will begin on July 1, 2023.

Biographical information is provided by the candidates. A “Meet the Candidates Night” will be held at 7 p.m. on May 2 in the Niskayuna High School Auditorium.

Kristin Duffy

Kristin Duffy is seeking a first term on the board. She works as director of legislative and regulatory affairs for AT&T. Duffy previously served on the Glencliff PTO as vice president of fundraising. She founded the nonprofit organization Christmas Pajamas Promise, which collects new pajamas and books for children in need during the holidays. Duffy has lived in Niskayuna for eight years and has five children.

Jessica LaFex

Jessica LaFex is seeking a first term on the board. She serves as co-president of the Rosendale and Iroquois PTOs and the PTO Council, and volunteers with several organizations, including as pantry manager and board member of Nisky NOW. LaFex is a 7-8 English teacher in South Colonie Central School District. She has lived in Niskayuna for 10 years and has three children.

Sarah Tishler

Sarah Tishler is seeking a first term on the board. She is an attorney in private practice, and she dedicates a significant part of her practice to free legal representation for underserved communities. A graduate of Niskayuna High School (Class of 2006), Sarah has been a resident of Niskayuna for a total of 21 years, and has two children.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballots are available at the District Office and will be issued upon request to residents who will be out of town or unable to vote at the polls due to illness or disability. Call the district clerk at (518) 377-4666, ext. 4, to obtain an absentee ballot and for information about deadlines.
