Niskayuna Board of Education selects “Niskayuna” as district team name

We’ve always been known as “Nisky,” and on Tuesday, April 8, our board of education reaffirmed that identity by officially adopting “Niskayuna” as our new team name. The more widely used “Nisky” was also acknowledged as a welcome and informal nickname.

Our former school moniker (the Silver Warriors) is being retired at the end of the school year following a New York State Education Department ruling that prohibits public schools from using Indigenous mascots and imagery. The change will go into effect for the 2025-26 school year.

After considering feedback gathered through a committee, ThoughtExchange and an opinion poll, the board decided that the district’s already unique name is the best way to show its originality. The board expressed that nothing else represents the depth of what our school district embodies because no other town or school can be “Nisky.”

From our district’s earliest origins in 1953, “Niskayuna” has been associated with excellence. Our district is a place where students succeed and thrive in our classrooms, on our courts and playing fields, on stage, and in a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities and competitions.
