The Niskayuna High School Science Olympiad team took first place at the Capital Region Science Olympiad Tournament, placing in 21 of 23 events. The tournament was held at Ballston Spa High School, with teams from more than 20 regional high schools competing.
Niskayuna will advance to the state tournament in March at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.
The high school Robotics team, the Robo Warriors, placed first at the Clarkson University Qualifier in the FIRST Tech Challenge. The team will compete at the NY Excelsior Regional Championship at Mohawk Valley Community College in March to vie for a spot at the World Championship in Houston, Texas.
Niskayuna received the Inspire Award at the event, which, among other criteria, judges a team for positivity, inclusivity, creativity and innovation.
Iroquois Middle School’s MathCounts team won first place at the Regional Qualifiers hosted at GE’s Research Center in Niskayuna. MathCounts is a nationwide middle school mathematics competition testing participants in various math topics, including geometry, probability, number theory and algebra.
The Iroquois team will advance to the State Finals next month in Saratoga Springs. Van Antwerp Middle School’s team also placed fourth at the event, and Brian Sun from Van Antwerp will advance to the finals as an individual qualifier.
